Opened on September 14 “The World Dream Awake“, the first major retrospective of fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck.

WALTER VAN BEIRENDONCK. Dream The World Awake

In recent decades Van Beirendonck has built an impressive international career. His colorful collections and spectacular fashion shows began in Paris in the year 1990 under the Companies L.T & Label, The social issues he raises in his work make him distinct in the world of Antwerp fashion: technology, art, pop culture, ethnicity… everything is explored in his designs.

The new exhibition provides a selection of the most extraordinary Beirendonck silhouettes – a survey of his world, inspiration and projects.

The narrative character of his work, his fascination with ethnography, spiritualism and the supernatural, ritual, science fiction and technology are discussed through his art form. You might wonder how he gives us his interpretation to socially imposed ideas? How he incorporates themes such as ecology, AIDS and mass consumption in his designs and presentations?

The Van Beirendonck exhibition is not just catwalk collections but also features costumes he designed for U2’s PopMart tour and includes photographic and video projects by fashion photographer Nick Knight / SHOWstudio.com, stylist Simon Foxton and the men’s British GQ Style.

The museum is open from Tuesday till Sunday from 10am till 6pm daily and you can find more info on the website of the Museum of Fashion.

The Rubens House, Antwerp

visit Palazzo Rubens exhibition Antwerp

We know Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) as the great Baroque painter, but did you know about his passion for architecture? Discover this other talent of the master in The Rubens House.

Rubens was a masterly painter who also had such a profound interest in architecture that he immersed himself in its theory and practice. In Italy he saw an architectural style that was dear to his heart. Michelangelo, in particular, was a great inspiration to Rubens, who experienced the revival of the architecture of antiquity as a much-needed relief from the ‘barbaric’ Gothic in his own country.

Rubens also designed buildings himself. He converted his own house into a prestigious town mansion, and he collaborated on the design of the Carolus Borromeuskerk in Antwerp.

Discover Rubens as a versatile architectural talent: a passionate connoisseur, a building-client with expertise, a designer and publisher. ‘Palazzo Rubens’ in The Rubens House is the very first exhibition to show this side of the Baroque master. You will see top-notch works from such great museums as the Hermitage in St Petersburg, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the British Museum in London. Paintings, drawings, prints, books and an audio tour allow you to share Rubens’s passion for architecture.
Related events are scheduled elsewhere: a concert series featuring old music, an architectural walk through Antwerp – even your smartphone can help you discover Rubens the architect!
